Our brains are considered the most outstanding organ and the greatest bio-technological achievement on the planet.

The problem is, our brains are bombarded with billions of bits of information every single second, but it can only process about two thousand.

Brain on Stress

Did you know that stress can cut your IQ in half? Makes you think eh? Well technically it doesn't.

When we're stressed, our bodies are not in a learning state. Quite the opposite actually. Our bodies stress response begins by releases cortisol and all sorts of other hormones into our blood stream and then sends that blood to our extremities in order to run away from or fight back to the threat. As much as the mind wants to pay attention, our body has other plans. The brain has already begun shutting down the network of brain regions that are responsible for cognitive functioning, including the hippocampus and pre frontal cortex. This is the part of the brain that's most recently developed by humans. It's responsible for our creative mind, and our idea of self.

By now the brain's energy is focused on the amygdala, which is also known as the fear centre.

serves as the central hub for our fear response and .

meditate

Meditation is not new. It's an ancient technique that has been around for centuries, just like our ancestral brains. Meditation not only can help our state of mind, but also have serious benefits for our physical bodies and brains.
The use of rosaries, and prayer beads have also been around for centuries. One of the reasons they are used it to stimulate the nerve endings in your hands in order to help bring the body and mind's awareness to the present moment.
Try meditating with an old soul bracelet. Place a bead between your index and thumb, and notice how it kinaesthetically stimulates your touch senses and helps bring your awareness to the present moment.
A great way to get kids excited about meditation!

exercise

fidgets

Everybody knows we need to exercise more in order to adopt a healthy lifestyle. But we tend to forget that our brains need exercise too.
Movement facilitates learning. It strengthens synapse connections and fires motor neurons in your hand and all the way to your sensory cortex, which physically helps the brain with learning, memory, and proprioception.  So when we exercise or do a cognitive demanding task, we are actually strengthening the brain much like a muscle.
Try old soul exercises to not only relieve stress, but help build a better brain, so you can get better at doing what you love. Great for musicians, artists, athletes and anyone looking to improve fine motor skills in a fun new way.
Fidgets are being seen to be a very effective brain tool for certain types of people, especially people with ADHD.  They act as a (secondary function) self-regulation tool so that a person can cope with stress levels in order to apply their mind on a cognitive task (primary function).

Fidgets have two main purposes. They can can help with overstimulation, acting as a catalyst for excess energy. Having something to keep your hands busy in an overwhelming environment can help calm the brain down.
And secondly they can help with understimulation.  This is important because if a brain has become accustom to high amounts of artificial stimulation,  understimulating environments like a class lecture will be even more unbareable for the brain.
There has yet to be a fidget product that offers a practical approach towards cognitive enhancing - until now.  Try an old soul bracelet when reading, learning, thinking, traveling, watching netflix, surfing the web, or when hanging with friends and family.
A great way to stay off your phone when you should be concentrating on your surroundings. Think of it as a reminder!

exercise improving mood and sleep, which are areas that impact cognitive behaviour. Studies have shown that exercise can positively impact the release of certain chemicals in the brain that impact the health of brain cells, the growth of new blood vessels in the brain, and even the abundance and survival of new brain cells. The prefrontal cortex and medial temporal cortex, which are parts of the brain that control thinking and memory, have been shown to be larger in volume in people who exercise versus people who don’t.

In order to actually be present in the moment, it helps our brain to be in a calm, parasympathetic state.
Stress not only prevents that, but it can also negatively effect our health, memory, ability to learn and overall brain function.
This can leave you in a sub-optimal state of mind that can keep you more focused on surviving rather than thriving.
